The Tamar Estuary MCZs are located in two spatially separate areas. The MCZs cover an area of approximately 15 km2 and include the upper reaches of the Tamar and Lynher estuaries of South Devon and Cornwall.
The sheltered habitats found within this site are subject to various salinity levels and tidal exposures. This diverse estuarine environment supports a number of features of ecological importance. These MCZs are particularly important as they are the only site where smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) is protected. Smelt is a migratory fish species which has suffered large declines throughout its range and is known to breed in the Tamar.

Forder Valley is a Local Nature Reserve in the northeast of Plymouth, next to the communities of Leigham, Estover and Eggbuckland. It's a good sized green space (28 hectares) where you can enjoy walking and playing as well as exploring nature.
The most recent improvements to the site carried out by the Stepping Stones to Nature project have included upgrading paths, new signage designed by Leigham Primary School children, a pond dipping platform, picnic table and natural play features.
Why not enjoy a circular walk through the reserve? Stroll along the old tramway under the tree canopy, down to the pond and meadow to the picnic area. There are some steps, slopes and uneven ground on the route.
From Monday 4 November 2019 until 2022 access to the Forder Valley Nature Reserve from Novorossiysk Road will be closed along with a short section of public footpath. This is to ensure public safety during construction of the Forder Valley Link Road. Access into the nature reserve will be maintained from Sheepstor Road and Longbridge Road.

Kings Tamerton Wood is a proposed Local Nature Reserve covering around eight hectares (that's about eight full-sized football pitches) and located in the west of Plymouth adjacent to the neighbourhood of Kings Tamerton.
Kings Tamerton Wood is a young wood and most of the trees were planted here approximately 20 years ago as a community woodland. The pathways through the woodland were upgraded in 2014 and allow you to explore the site. There are also areas of grassland within the reserve. Why not explore the wood and watch it develop and grow over time as it matures into a diverse woodland?
Habitats will be managed for wildlife to increase the biodiversity of the wood. The site includes grassland, hedgerows, immature planted broadleaf woodland and scrub.
